The Polish Triangle Coalition was formed to improve the area at Ashland Avenue, Division Street and Milwaukee Avenue.
Community groups, merchants and schools are working to create a more pleasant and lively area at the Polish Triangle. The site:
- sits along one of Chicago’s historic Native American footpaths (now Milwaukee Avenue)
- has heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic
- is a transportation hub in the midst of a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) district with commercial and residential usage
- is the primary destination for Blue Line travelers
- hosts public events for children and adults
- is surrounded by educational, religious, food and
- faces many typical urban challenges, including loitering and pigeons
Tuesdays at the Triangle entertainment events, community markets and other activities organized by the Polish Triangle Coalition revealed a change in perception about the Polish Triangle:
- Community and travelers began viewing the space as a destination
- Some visitors socialized and others preferred privacy during cultural events
- Individuals and organizations increased participation as their perception of the space changed
- Temporary food service was embraced by locals and commuters
- Having a regular presence onsite showed that an “caretaker” will result in a cleaner location and more destination visits
The Polish Triangle Coalition, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was organized in 2011 to plan and implement physical and cultural improvements to the Triangle and its surroundings as the hub of local neighborhood revitalization initiatives and activities.
